WALTER STÖHRER
Walter Stöhrer (*1937-†2000) gained his fame in the sixties as master of grand painterly gestures with his abstract, eruptive work. After finishing his studies with HAP Grieshaber at the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe in 1959, Stöhrer belongs to the generation that successfully sets itself apart from postwar Art Informel with ‘Neuer Figuration’. Nevertheless, he remained closely connected to tachism and developed his own variation on its painting method of “écriture automatique”, which had already been adopted by the surrealists. After completing his training alongside fellow students Horst Antes and Dieter Krieg, he moved to Berlin, where he was awarded the city’s art prize in 1964.
His estate does not only encompass an enormous body of painterly work, but also an extensive body of drawings and etchings.
