Anna Leonhardt studied at the Dresden University of Fine Arts and was a master student of Ralf Kerbach. She has lived and worked in New York for several years. Initially committed to the object, Leonhardt's painting has developed from two-dimensional colour structures to a non-objective, iconic formal language. In her multi-layered, richly coloured oil paintings, abstract figures float in a deeply sculptural pictorial space. The vertical and horizontal forms, which the artist calls ‘spatial stuff’, seem to float freely, but are in constant interaction and embody Leonhardt's innate sense of rhythm and balance, space and surface. Although her paintings are abstract, they still obey the rules of figurative painting.
